Listen and Learn: A Podcast on Rare Breed Farm Animals

I’ve written, edited and read a decent amount about heritage-breed animals—traditional, often rare, livestock breeds—but there’s a lot I don’t know about them. I was reminded of this while listening to The Livestock Conservancy’s new Heritage Breeds podcasts, available for download or by subscription through iTunes, Stitcher or your preferred podcast app.

The new podcasts highlight the history and importance of heritage breeds and introduce listeners to their breeders and preservation champions. According to the podcast’s iTunes description, 21 percent of the world’s 8,000 livestock breeds are in danger of extinction (!!!), so The Livestock Conservancy has its podcasts cut out for them.

The Livestock Conservancy is looking for people to interview and for sponsors, too, so if you’re a heritage-breeds kind of person, follow the links to give the organization a holler.

In case you’re not familiar with The Livestock Conservancy, it’s an organization working with farmers, chefs, historians, consumers and others to protect the genetic diversity of traditional farm breeds. Think of it as the animal equivalent of a heirloom-seed preservation group. I’ve been a fan of the organization since I first learned about it as editor of Hobby Farms magazine. I’ve interviewed sources and used research from them in countless articles. Now they’re helping us get our ag-knowledge on in a nice, neat podcast package.

Take a listen, and tell us in the comments below what you think!
